If We Are Exceptional, Why Do We Not Care About Our Poor
America and Americans have always given the impression that we care about the poor. America was founded on the ideal that one can control his or her destiny here. Even on the Statue of Liberty, Lazarus (1883) states, ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËGive me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore; Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!ââ¬â¢ â⬠(para. 2). These words have become symbolic of the American dream. The words told some new immigrants coming to America how their new country is exceptional and offers opportunities for the poor. However, the United States of America may not be as exceptional as we claim. When one looks at the facts, we may not reallyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These people are looked up to and declared stars in the United States. People may even look up to them and aspire to be like them. However, there have been few reality shows that depict poorer A mericans in this same way. Recently, anytime a poorer family has been shown on television it has been in a negative light, and the people on it have not been declared starts or exceptional in any way. Ridgway (2013) states, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ [these shows were] just created for our bemusement and mockery of ââ¬Ëwhite trashââ¬â¢ a là ¡ Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo or Swamp Peopleâ⬠(para.27). These shows are not there to educate Americans about the real struggles of the poor or to help us understand how to help them; they are only created for amusement. This is done by television producers to gain viewers and to make money but it has some bad consequences. When people are always depicted as a source of comedy or stupidity, they are never taken seriously. By always showing poverty in a way that is supposed to entertain us, it takes the seriousness out of it because entertainment is usually seen as fantasy. By not exposing poorer Americans in a positive light or not at all in the media, America is showing that they do not care about them or that they are only a group of people to make fun of. Another reason why American citizens seem to not care about the poor in our county is that the media does not give us all of the facts about poverty.
